Course materials data: What to look for and why you need it https://www.ecampusnews.com/teaching-learning/2023/05/25/course-materials-data/ Thu, 25 May 2023 09:00:00 +0000 https://www.ecampusnews.com/?p=101577 From financial and transactional data to usage and engagement data, transparency is key when it comes to course materials dataCourse materials reporting, analytics, and financial reconciliation have become massive undertakings for schools these days. This is, in large part, because data often lives in different silos, platforms, and systems across campuses, making it difficult for schools to know what information is available, let alone how to compile and assess all of it.

Engineering education is broken https://www.ecampusnews.com/teaching-learning/2023/05/04/engineering-education-is-broken/ Thu, 04 May 2023 09:00:00 +0000 https://www.ecampusnews.com/?p=101422 Engineering education must be broken apart, updated, rebundled with a balance between fundamentals and industry best practice. The problems the world faces are multidisciplinary in nature and their solution requires an integrated, multidisciplinary approach, i.e., science + engineering + business + society + managing complexity. This is not the way engineers are educated, nor the way companies function. Only through innovation can these problems be solved. But what is innovation? It is hard to define, but one knows it when one sees it!

Education vs. learning: It’s all about ownership https://www.ecampusnews.com/teaching-learning/2023/04/25/education-vs-learning-its-all-about-ownership/ Tue, 25 Apr 2023 09:00:00 +0000 https://www.ecampusnews.com/?p=101455 Students should take ownership of learning and study to become something, not just to pass tests and eventually get engineering jobs.No one has ever washed a rented car!  Tom Friedman and Lawrence Summers have used this statement often to emphasize the importance of ownership.  It originated in 1985 from the response of a military noncommissioned officer to a question from a general officer about aircraft maintenance and the importance of owning the whole aircraft and not just a piece of it – only whole planes fly!
